How to Find a Trustworthy Drain Engineer (And Avoid Cowboys)
A blocked drain is stressful, and when you're under pressure to get it fixed quickly, it's easy to call the first company that appears in a Google search. But the drainage industry has its share of rogue operators who overcharge, do unnecessary work, or leave the job half-finished. Here's how to protect yourself.
1. Check for trade association membership
The most reliable indicator of a legitimate drain clearance company is membership of a recognised trade association. The main ones are:
- NADC (National Association of Drainage Contractors) — the UK's leading trade body for drainage professionals. Members must meet standards of competence and carry appropriate insurance.
- Which? Trusted Traders — an endorsement scheme where companies are vetted and customer-reviewed.
- Checkatrade — a directory of vetted tradespeople with published customer reviews.
2. Ask for a fixed price upfront
Reputable companies will give you a clear, fixed price before starting work. Be wary of companies that quote an hourly rate, charge a "diagnostic fee," or tell you they need to do expensive CCTV surveys before they can quote. Most standard blocked drains can be cleared for a fixed fee of £100–£250.
3. Read customer reviews
Don't rely on testimonials on the company's own website — these can be curated or fabricated. Check independent review platforms like Google Reviews, Trustpilot, or comparison sites like Drain Review. Look for companies with a high number of reviews (not just a high rating) as this indicates consistent service.
4. Verify insurance
Any legitimate drain engineer should carry public liability insurance (typically £2m+) and, ideally, professional indemnity insurance. Don't be afraid to ask — a good company will readily provide proof. If they can't, walk away.
5. Watch for red flags
Be cautious of companies that:
- Won't give a price until they arrive
- Insist on an expensive CCTV survey for a simple blockage
- Pressure you into additional work you didn't request
- Only accept cash payments
- Can't provide a company address or landline number
- Have very few or no customer reviews online
6. Get a second quote
If a company quotes significantly more than £250 for a standard blockage, or suggests extensive repairs, get a second opinion. Use Drain Review to find other top-rated companies in your area and compare.
Know your rights
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, any service you pay for must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, at a reasonable price, and within a reasonable time. If the work is substandard, you have the right to request a repair, a price reduction, or a refund. Citizens Advice offers free guidance on disputes with tradespeople.
